Can you just replace a uPVC door?
Giving your home great kerb appeal may sound as simple as replacing a uPVC door, but there is more to it than meets the eye. Dependant on your needs, it is important to consider:
- What makes up a uPVC door: The key components being the sash and panel
- The frame: Its relation with the door’s function is important
- Any toplight or side panels: As well as how they affect the doorway
The parts of a uPVC door
What makes up the door: The sash, panel and glass.
Description: The sash is a bracket that attaches to the frame by hinges. Fitted within the sash is the panel, the primary design of the door. A panel can be fully solid, like with the Leven One Solid uPVC Front Door, or include glass, like in the Leven Classic Blenvie uPVC Door. A panel can be swapped out of the sash for a different design. In the case of glass, most door designs incorporate this within the panel, and so changing the glass would require replacing the panel as well. However, in the case of half-glazed doors, like the Edinburgh Box Lead uPVC Front Door, glass is fitted directly within the sash, making it easy to swap out.
The uPVC door and frame
How they’re connected: The door is attached to the frame via hinges, but both ensure effective security and insulation.
Description: In theory, it is possible to simply replace a door and not the frame. However, the key disadvantages are the misalignment of the locking system and the potential for poor insulation, due to the door and frame not fully matching up. While it may sound cost-effective, this is not advisable.
Replacing both the door and frame ensures that these fit well together, providing effective insulation and better energy efficiency, as well as reliable security in matching locking mechanisms.
Should you replace side panels & toplights?
What these are: Solid or glass panels directly surrounding the door.
Description: Toplights and side panels that are coupled to the frame, i.e. not integrated into them, can be kept. However, it is recommended to replace these with toplights/side panels purpose-built for the door, as they will provide seamless design (using the same profile and colour finish as our doors) and more reliable insulation (no potential gaps from the attempted joining of different materials).
To conclude, while you can replace a uPVC door without replacing anything else, such as the frame or side panels, it is inadvisable to do so this way. Upgrading your entire doorway is a sound investment, not only for uniform kerb appeal, but also for effective energy efficiency.
